The Woman’s Club of Evanston was founded in 1889, with the initial constitution stating: “To secure better homes, wiser motherhood, better laws, truer citizenship and a nobler womanhood by promoting the physical, social, mental, moral and spiritual development of its members.” In 1893, this statement was revised and condensed to “Mutual helpfulness in all affairs of life, and united effort toward the higher development of humanity.”
The Woman’s Club of Evanston has long focused on public health and social causes promoting equity. From typhoid fever and smallpox responses to women’s suffrage to community art support, they have worked to create positive change in the community, and continue to do so actively. We hope you’ll carry on the goodwill as our guest in this (National Register of) Historic Place!
Eric and Elizabeth’s lives began to intertwine on a fateful day in July 2021. After exchanging just a few short sentences through a dating app on a Friday afternoon, they inadvertently crossed paths only a few hours later! They both found themselves at the same street festival in Chicago. Elizabeth ran into one of her co-workers that evening who happened to be one of Eric’s friends he was with that same night! As they chatted, Eric sat on a bench a mere ten feet away. Their eyes did meet and they recognized each other but quickly shot down the thought of interacting in that moment. With a clear opening now, and confirming her identity, Eric hopped back on that app and propositioned Elizabeth for a first date and boy what a first date it was!
Elizabeth was running a few minutes late (per usual) and Eric was trying to not sweat too much on his leisurely bike ride to the bar. When he was crossing through an intersection on a green light, a car made a left turn and blasted into Eric head on. He flipped and skidded over the hood of the car only to miraculously land on his feet. Elizabeth likes to say he vaulted into a new life. His bike was not so lucky and sadly had to be replaced. Instead of meeting at the bar like they planned, Eric told her she had to meet him at the scene of the crime. People at the scene called 911 and he had to sign over a waiver with the fire department that he was not injured because he had a date to get to! So, instead of meeting at the bar like they planned, they officially met at a pole right next to the bus stop at the beautiful intersection of California and Milwaukee in Logan Square, how romantic! Needless to say, adrenaline was running high! The first date was a resounding success as they proceeded to have hours of conversation filled with laughter. When it was time to go home, Eric offered to walk her home and they soon discovered that they lived just two blocks down the street from each other. Their relationship evolved rapidly after that fateful first night. The cosmos truly wanted Elizabeth and Eric to fall in love.
Our latest Colorado visit was certainly the most eventful to date. We started our trip with Elizabeth’s inaugural Red Rocks concert on our 3rd anniversary to see one of our favorite bands, Tedeschi Trucks Band. Two days later we went camping at the Brainerd Lake Recreation Area high up in the Rocky Mountains within the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. Eric scouted the perfect spot along the stunning Lake Isabelle on the way up the mountain trail. Eventually, we turned around once the rock turned to ice and we had no path forward. As we approached Lake Isabelle once again, Eric asked our friends hiking with us to snap a few photos of us standing in THE spot. The rest is history.
